This brand new rod from Sage is a bit of a blast from the past. Based off of Sage's popular original Light Line series, the new Trout LL combines all of the attributes folks loved about the original, with the added benefits of modern graphite technology. The rod bends deeply, offering a great feel for when the rod is loading, which allows the caster to improve their timing to make sure they make that cast at a picky riser count. It's not a slow rod, though; despite the added feel, it's crisp action doesn't require the angler to slow the casting stroke as considerably as with fiberglass or bamboo.
We've found the Trout LL to be an extremely pleasant rod to cast and fish, particularly for dry fly fishing here in Yellowstone country. It will still cast a light nymph rig, but it really shines when casting an unweighted fly. It loads well on short casts for pocket water rivers like the Madison, where we often get close enough to the fish to nearly touch them with the rod tip. It's got some power, though, too, and we really like it for making longer casts to selective feeders on Hebgen Lake as well. We feel the rod fishes best with a line that is true to line weight, and paired with a line like the new Rio Technical Trout, you'll have a dynamite dry fly setup.
All told, the new Trout LL is a great modern take on a true classic!
