Perfect Quills from Semperfli are a new product we are really excited about. The clear quills with a dark edge allow you to tie a quill body in any color you choose simply by wrapping the body in the desired color and then wrapping the quill over top for easy segmentation every time. It also gives you the ability to use flash for the body, which is what we've done with this fly. The sparkly, segmented effect looks quite sharp, especially when coated with UV resin, and provides a simple but highly effective nymph profile to the fish. And as with all bullet-style flies, the slim profile really helps the fly get down quickly into the strike zone.
Step 1: Place a bead on the hook and then lay a thread base back to the bend. Tie in about six tail fibers, a bit shorter than the length of the shank.
Step 2: Tie in a quill on top of the hook, adhesive side up. Then tie in two strands of Krystal Flash and move the thread toward the eye, building a slightly tapered thread body along the way.
Step 3: Wrap the Krystal Flash forward, evenly covering the hook shank. Tie off just behind the bead.
Step 4: Wrap the quill forward evenly over top of the flash, adhesive side down. Tie off just behind the bead and trim the excess. Whip finish.
Step 5: Coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin and cure with a UV light.
